2.7 Understand the difference between mains electricity being alternating current (a.c.) and direct current (d.c.) being supplied

Direct current:

  • Flows in one direction only (+ to -)
  • Supplied by cells and batteries
  • On an oscilloscope, shows a straight line
Alternating current:
  • Varies between + and - 
  • Changes direction very quickly
  • Mains electricity is AC
  • On an oscilloscope, shows a wiggly line
